Dispensaries \ Caregivers

Question 2 establishes laws regarding dispensaries and caregivers. Caregivers must be designated by the patient and have the responsibility for assisting the patient in the safe use of medical marijuana, and providing medical cannabis to patients. A caregiver may care for up to five (5) qualifying patient at a time. Maine Caregivers must be registered with the state, and be 21 years of age or older. The caregiver may receive a reasonable monetary compensation for their services. Caregivers need to obtain a Caregiver Registration Card, complete a background check, and need to pass without a disqualifying drug offense. Dispensaries are authorized to grow and provide registered qualifying patients with usable marijuana and related paraphernalia. These are state licensed operations that must register with the state of Maine. Medical dispensaries are limited to one dispensary per public health districts. The Health Department will oversee the creation on as many as eight facilities to dispense medical cannabis to authorized patients.
